Iceland Timelapse Video

Did you know that all of the places featured in this beautiful video is accessible to anyone? These places, including Jökulsárlón, Seljalandsfoss, Dyrhólaey, Foss á Síðu, Svínafellsjökull, Skaftafell, Skógafoss, Hvítserkur, Víkurfjörur and Hekla are all right by Iceland’s main road, the Ring Road or very close by. They are also all by the south coast. Imagine what you can find if you venture a bit off the beaten track or finish the ring.

The second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones is largely filmed in my backyard on and around the Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers in Iceland. The filming was done last november and the airing will be between April and June this year.

The crew appears to value the unique Icelandic landscapes, saying “You could try to CGI this, but there is no need. Just look at this.” Director, Alan Taylor, also says that it inspires the crew, going “to a world that actually invokes the world we are trying to create”.

The filming was quite hush hush and didn’t cause much interest in Iceland. The first time people really noticed it, was when people thought lights from the filming was the beginning of a Katla eruption.

Yesssssssss

The Icelandic Horse is a five-gaited breed of horse which means it has your usual walk, trot, canter/gallop it can also perform two others - the skeið/flugskeið (flying pace) and the tölt. The ‘tölt’ is a gait somewhat comparable to a strut, specifically used for long distances. It’s easier than trotting and a lot of Icelandics will opt to tölt rather than trot. Above is a very high speed tölt.

Eat waffles with The President of Iceland

Now this is a campaign only accomplishable in a tiny and friendly country such as Iceland. The President of Iceland launched the campaign with an address to the nation asking them to invite foreign guests into their homes or out for some play. Icelanders are supposed to go to the Inspired by Iceland website and register their invitations which visitors can then view and select.

Whether it is a private concert in your hotel room with one of my favorite singers Mugison, swimming in the sea with locals, learning to knit a lopapeysa, eat sushi with Jón Gnarr, milk some cows or go out for winter ice cream, I’m sure you’ll find someone to connect with.

The campaign was just launched today, so it will be interesting to watch the invitation list grow in the coming days. Wish I was home right now to make an invite.
